Your Signature File Is An Ad Waiting To Happen

Lisa Fraley

If you're not familiar with signature files, here's a quick definition: Signature files are the few lines of contact information you should be putting at the bottom of each and every email you send. If you are not using signature files you are missing out on the perfect opportunity to promote your business.

How many emails do you send a day? A week? A month? This can add up to many, many opportunities to get your marketing message out to a large audience for free!

Your signature file makes it easy for anyone who comes into contact with one of your email messages to reach you or your website. Also if someone wants to add you to their contact management software your signature file makes it as easy as copy and paste.

Your signature file will tell people what you do by not using your signature file you are wasting a chance to peddle your wares.

Email messages are forwarded all the time and you never know where yours might end up. Your signature file could end up in the inbox of potential clients or customers very interested in your services or products.

Another way to use your signature file is to announce new products, e-books and/or reports you are selling or giving away, your newsletter, product sales, website updates, etc.

If you haven't set up your signature file you can do so in most email clients by going to that particular client's option tab.

When setting up your signature file include the items most important to you and to your clients. Here are some example items to include.

Your name and title Your company name A brief description of what your company does Company address Telephone number Your email address Your website address An incentive to click your links â€" consider including this as often as you can. Offer something free such as a free e-book, report, article, newsletter subscription, etc. Keep your incentive lines to only one or two sentences.

Don't try to include all of the items above because that will cause your signature file to be too long. Try to stay under 8 lines. Again, choose the items most important to you and your clients.

The one thing you should make sure you include is what you do business wise. Believe it or not many people who use signature files leave this very important item out.

In most email clients you are allowed to set up more than one signature file. What about setting up one for each of your business opportunities, or a file specifically for your specials and promotions.

When your signature file delivers a clear impression of your offer to potential clients and/or customers it will indeed reward you many times over in the future.
