If you're buying or selling electronics - especially online like on Ebay - you've probably noticed that the no.1 source of the hot-selling gadgets like digital cameras and mp3 players is China.

China has become the world's largest maker of consumer electronics, producing more MP3 Players, Digital Cameras, Video Players, Electronic Gadgets, and other high tech products than any other country.

 1. Getting The Newest Gadgets

The first benefit you will see when you start to source electronics from China is that the products you can import are totally new and probably unique in your market. Not only that - the whole design cycle is so fast in China that you'll be able to come out with new designs and models of gadgets every month, out-innovating your competitors.

2. How Easy Is It To Deal With Chinese Suppliers?

It used to be the case that only Chinese speakers could deal effectively with electronics suppliers in China. Or you'd have to deal with expensive Hong Kong traders to help with the communication difficulties. All that has changed now: the electronics companies in China are really much better geared to international trade, and all of them will have at least some staff who are good at providing information and doing deals in English, or even other languages.

3. Isn't China On The Other Side Of The World?

If you are inexperienced in importing, shipping can seem a nightmare of jargon and expenses. But remember that your Chinese suppliers are trying to help you import their products, so they will be able to offer solutions for shipping any quantity of goods.

Large courier companies such as DHL, FedEx, and UPS are now operating in China too, so you can often use your courier account to get discount rates collecting goods from Chinese warehouses and shipping them straight to your door in a matter of days.

4. Buy From Wholesalers Or From Factories?

MOQ - minimum order quantity - is a big issue for newcomer importers. Do you really want to commit to multi-thousand dollar orders when you aren't even sure about the viability of the products... or the reliability of the Chinese supplier?

A good way to get low factory prices is to deal with a Chinese wholesaler. One such wholesaler, Chinavasion.com, offers electronics directly from Chinese factories, but without any minimum order requirements. That makes the initial sourcing process free of risky commitment for international importers, while retaining the low price advantage.

5. Dropshipping: Unknown In China?

New importers from China are often nervous about building up stock which they can't sell. High value items like electronics can add up to a big business risk, if you are holding stock waiting to sell it.

One solution to this difficulty is dropshipping. You can advertise the products you've found from Chinese suppliers, but only pay for them when you receive orders. The Chinese dropshipper then delivers straight to your customer. You keep the profit without the risk, and without the hassle of handling and packing goods.

6. Paying Chinese Suppliers

If you're starting out buying electronics or any other products from China, you're going to have to find some safe way to pay your suppliers. The best solution is paying through secure online payment systems such as Paypal, which offer a great level of buyer protection while also being a fast and cheap way to send money.

Many Chinese suppliers accept payment by bank transfer. They supply their bank details including an international SWIFT code and you instruct your bank to transfer funds. Of course you will need to make absolutely sure you're dealing with a reputable company, but once your relationship is established with your supplier, this is a good way to make fast payments.

Large import deals (in the tens of thousands of dollars) should always be paid with a Letter of Credit, which offers a sort of escrow protection for both parties. Your bank will be able to advise on how to set up letters of credit.

Don't make payments to Chinese suppliers by cheque, money order, cash, or Western Union, as these routes are prone to obvious problems. Most serious Chinese sellers will not ask for payment in those methods.

7. China Import Profits: Don't Miss The Boat

China is the factory of the world - and it will be for many years to come. 2007-2008 will be a crucial time for importers to get into the China market and form solid relationships with electronics suppliers. The consumer demand for new products is still strong in international markets, and Chinese prices are low while quality and service are increasing due to more competition between Chinese factories.
